Information Sharing Workgroup Charter

From IdCommons

Name

Information Sharing Working Group (ISWG)

Purpose

The Information Sharing Work Group is a foreign organization, chartered under the Kantara Initiative.

Project VRM and other related parties wish to build a framework around which a new type of personal information can be enabled to flow, and in doing so improve the relationship between demand and supply. Our contention is that when individuals are forced to sign organization-centric privacy policies/ terms of use then this places limitations on the information that will be shared. If such constraints were removed, and capabilities built on the side of the individual, then new, rich information will flow - including actual demand data (as opposed to derived/ predicted demand). The goal of this working group is to identify and document the use cases and scenarios that illustrate the various sub-sets of individual-driven information sharing, the benefits therein, and specify the policy and technology enablers that should be put in place to enable this information to flow.

Principles

As a Kantara Initiative Work Group, the Information Sharing Work Group will operate by the Identity Commons principles, subject to the requirements of the ISWG's Kantara Initiative participation. The ISWG shall participate in the Identity Commons to facilitate communication, collaboration, and mutual benefit. For matters of quorum, elections, charter, and other organizational matters, the Kantara Initiative procedures shall prevail.

Practices

The work group has a weekly 90 minute teleconference with screen sharing, a mailing list, and a section on the Kantara Initiative wiki at http://kantarainitiative.org/confluence/display/infosharing/Home . Occasionally the group meets face to face, typically aligned with other industry workshops such as IIW and Project VRM meetings.

Requirements of Participation and How to Join

Contributory participation in the Information Sharing Work Group requires signing the Information Sharing Work Group Participation Agreement, which documents the participant's agreement to the Kantara IPR Policy – Option Patent & Copyright: Reciprocal Royalty Free with Opt-Out to Reasonable And Non discriminatory (RAND) ( http://kantarainitiative.org/confluence/download/attachments/2293776/Kantara+Initiative+IPR+Policies+_V1.0_+2009-04-03.pdf?version=1&modificationDate=1239829651000 ). History

The ISWG spun out of work done at the Project VRM Standards Committee and was initially chartered as the User-Driven Volunteered Personal Information Work Group, or UD-VPI for short. It now operates as the Information Sharing Work Group of the Kantara Initiative. We joined the Identity Commons to formalize the existing participation between ISWG leadership and participants in the Identity Commons community.
